 The True Meaning of Meekness

Meekness is a possible attribute of human nature and behavior

 The True Meaning of Meekness
Numbers 12:3

Meekness is a possible attribute of human nature and behavior. It has been defined several ways:

God-fearing, righteous, humble, teachable, and patient under suffering; willing to follow gospel teachings; an attribute of a true disciple.

The Christian Apostle Paul gave an example of meek behavior when writing to Timothy: “The servant of the Lord must be gentle, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose.” (2 Tim. 2:24–25)

A meek behavior is presented as being opposite to “the natural man” (i.e. one who acts strictly according to desires of the body): “Put off the natural man and become meek.”

Sir Thomas Browne explained: “Meekness takes injuries like pills, not chewing, but swallowing them down.” This indicates that meekness allows a person to overlook or forgive perceived insults or offenses.

  • A disposition to be patient and long-suffering
  • Power under control – roughly equivalent in common usage to humility
  • Meekness is one of the Seven virtues in Christian tradition
  • Jesus of Nazareth preached, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth”
  • Meek, a Greek derivative also refers to a war horse that is bridled and ready for battle

Some people confuse “meekness” with “weak”. Good meaning of the word meekness is getting angry at the right time, in the right measure for the right reason.

Moses was a “very meek”, in fact he was the meekest man on the face of the earth. If you say it in another way, he was able to maintain careful balance between his emotional feelings.

Moses was patient, he was long suffering with the Israelite’s. He could’ve blasted them for their sins they committed and their rebellion, but Moses prayed for them instead. He put up with their decades of their gripping and complaining and their insolence from them for the sins they committed along with their rebellion, but Moses prayed, they never got tired of trying his patience not to mention his endurance.

When Moses came down from the top of the mountain, boy was he angry, because they were bowing down to a golden calf, the tablets the Lord gave with the 10 Commandments, Moses threw down.

There is always a time for everything and a place just like there is a time to express anger and to repress it, wisdom does know the difference. A meek person isn’t someone who never shows their anger, but someone who never allows his anger to get out of control.

Even though, Moses was a meek and devoted man, he wasn’t perfect, none of us are, but there was a time when Moses did allow his anger to get out of control, but God punished him for it.

Meekness, is not being without our emotion, it simply means being in charge of our emotions and channeling it in the right direction for the right purpose.

God entrusted Moses with great power, and allot of responsibility. God gave Moses a great deal and God expected a great deal from him to.

Matthew 5:5 “Blessed…..are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Ask God to give you meekness! He will give it to you, if you ask Him to!!!!
