The Wise and the Foolish

Ecclesiastes 2:12 So I decided to compare wisdom and folly, and anyone else would come to the same conclusions I did.

Ecclesiastes 2:13 Wisdom is of more value than foolishness, just as light is better than darkness.

Ecclesiastes 2:14 For the wise person sees, while the fool is blind. Yet I saw that wise and foolish people share the same fate.

Ecclesiastes 2:15 Both of them die. Just as the fool will die, so will I. So of what value is all my wisdom? Then I said to myself, “This is all so meaningless!”

Ecclesiastes 2:16 For the wise person and the fool both die, and in the days to come, both will be forgotten.

Wisdom For Life

Ecclesiastes 7:11 Being wise is as good as being rich; in fact, it is better.

Ecclesiastes 7:12 Wisdom or money can get you almost anything, but it’s important to know that only wisdom can save your life.

2 Chronicles 1:10 Give me wisdom and knowledge to rule them properly, “for who is able to govern this great nation of yours?”

2 Chronicles 1:11 God said to Solomon, “Because your greatest desire is to help your people, and you did not ask for personal wealth and honor or the death of your enemies or even a long life, but rather you asked for wisdom and knowledge to properly govern my people,

2 Chronicles 1:12 I will certainly give you the wisdom and knowledge you requested. And I will also give you riches, wealth, and honor such as no other king has ever had before you or will ever have again!”

2 Chronicles 1:13 Then Solomon returned to Jerusalem from the Tabernacle at the hill of Gibeon, and he reigned over Israel.

Solomon was granted Wisdom and Knowledge just as he asked for, yet did not guarantee that he would preserve in faithfulness to God. God told him to be careful and to walk in His ways, and to obey his commands.

Processing Wisdom or an exceptional knowledge of God’s Word does not guarantee that a person will live for God according o hat Wisdom & follow His way. Solomon departed from God & went his own way and failed to do what was right & constantly was rejected by God.

The Limits of Human Wisdom

Ecclesiastes 7:15 In this meaningless life, I have seen everything, including the fact that some good people die young and some wicked people live on and on.

Ecclesiastes 7:16 So don’t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?

Ecclesiastes 7:17 On the other hand, don’t be too wicked either—don’t be a fool! Why should you die before your time?

Ecclesiastes 7:18 So try to walk a middle course—but those who fear God will succeed either way.

Ecclesiastes 7:19 A wise person is stronger than the ten leading citizens of a town!

Ecclesiastes 7:20 There is not a single person in all the earth who is always good and never sins.

Ecclesiastes 7:21 Don’t eavesdrop on others—you may hear your servant laughing at you.

Ecclesiastes 7:22 For you know how often you yourself have laughed at others.

Ecclesiastes 7:23 All along I have tried my best to let wisdom guide my thoughts and actions. I said to myself, “I am determined to be wise.” But it didn’t really work.

Ecclesiastes 7:24 Wisdom is always distant and very difficult to find.

Ecclesiastes 7:25 I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.

Thoughts on Wisdom and Folly

Ecclesiastes 9:13 Here is another bit of wisdom that has impressed me as I have watched the way our world works.

Ecclesiastes 9:14 There was a small town with only a few people living in it, and a great king came with his army and besieged it.

Ecclesiastes 9:15 There was a poor, wise man living there who knew how to save the town, and so it was rescued. But afterward no one thought any more about him.

Ecclesiastes 9:16 Then I realized that though wisdom is better than strength, those who are wise will be despised if they are poor. What they say will not be appreciated for long.

Ecclesiastes 9:17 But even so, the quiet words of a wise person are better than the shouts of a foolish king.
Ecclesiastes 9:18 A wise person can overcome weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much that is good.

1 Corinthians 12:28 Here is a list of some of the members that God has placed in the body of Christ:

  • first are apostles

  • second are prophets

  • third are teachers

  • then those who do miracles

  • those who have the gift of healing

  • those who can help others

  • those who can get others to work together

  • those who speak in unknown languages

1 Corinthians 12:29 Is everyone an apostle? Of course not. Is everyone a prophet? No. Are all teachers? Does everyone have the power to do miracles?

1 Corinthians 12:30 Does everyone have the gift of healing? Of course not. Does God give all of us the ability to speak in unknown languages? Can everyone interpret unknown languages? No!

1 Corinthians 12:31 And in any event, you should desire the most helpful gifts. Love Is the Greatest First, however, let me tell you about something else that is better than any of them!

Exodus 36:2 So Moses told Bezalel and Oholiab to begin the work, along with all those who were specially gifted by the Lord.

Psalms 19:7  The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
