LYING And What God Tells Us About It

LYING And What God Tells Us About It

LYING And What God Tells Us About It

Lying is deceiving someone. It can be direct-”I didn’t touch that cake” (as you swallow the last bite)-or it can be indirect, such as telling only part of the truth when it benefits you to do so.

But to fall short of truth, in any way, is to lie. Pilate asked, “What is truth?” (John 18:38).

Pilate had the answer to his question standing before him, in person. “I am the way, the truth and the life,” Jesus said on another occasion (John 14:6). Think of it! Jesus not only tells the truth, he is truth.

We cannot follow the God of truth while we persistently tell lies-even “small” ones. Determine to tell the truth in all matters of life, big or small.

People all the times, say they are not lying about something, but the whole entire times, they are lying through their teeth. Let’s just say, you say you cannot remember what happened 10 minutes ago, but yet you remember 10 years ago, or visa versa.

I hear all the times, I cannot remember this, I cannot remember that, but yet deep inside you surely do….. that’s considered a lie as well. People say, “Oh it was just a white lie” or “I just didn’t tell it all” well, it is still a LIE.

WHY DO WE LIE

Acts 20:30 . . . Even some of you will distort the truth in order to draw a following.
We sometimes lie to become popular.

Acts 5:1-11 . . . [Ananias] brought part of the money to the apostles, but he claimed it was the full amount. His wife had agreed to this deception.

We sometimes lie to make ourselves look good.

Genesis 4:9 . . . Afterward the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother?”. . . “I don’t know!” Cain retorted.

We sometimes lie to avoid trouble and punishment or because of being left alone, or loosing your financial security or a friendship.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO TELL THE TRUTH

Proverbs 12:19 . . . Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed.

Ephesians 4:25 . . . Put away all falsehood and “tell your neighbor the truth” because we belong to each other.

WHAT DOES GOD THINK ABOUT LYING? HOW SHOULD WE FEEL ABOUT LYING

Proverbs 6:17-19 . . . There are six things the Lord hates-no, seven . . . haughty eyes, a lying tongue.

Proverbs 12:22 . . . The Lord hates those who don’t keep their word, but he delights in those who do.

Romans 1:18 . . . God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who push the truth away from themselves.

God is truth, so he must hate lies and lying. He cannot tolerate them because they violate his personhood.

Psalm 119:163 . . . I hate and abhor all falsehood.

Proverbs 13:5 . . . Those who are godly hate lies.

Colossians 3:9 . . . Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old evil nature and all its wicked deeds.

We should hate lies because they are part of the old sinful nature we had before we were Christians.

CAN WE LIE WITHOUT USING WORDS

Proverbs 10:18 . . . To hide hatred is to be a liar; to slander is to be a fool.

1 John 1:10 . . . If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

We lie whenever we deceive God, others, or even ourselves.

PROMISE FROM GOD: Proverbs 12:19 . . . Truth stands the test of time; lies are soon exposed.

Lies will be exposed.

Lying is NOT LOVING GOD, living in sin is not loving God, saying you are not a sinner or that you sin, is lying. If, you live in with another person and not being married and you say, we are not sinning, it’s ok God does not see nothing wrong with it, That IS A LIE, you are LYING ON GOD as well.

If, you say I don’t drink, or smoke or party all night and you know you do, that is still lying…… to Prove you LOVE GOD, then own up to the lies you are telling or withholding.

WHY IS GOD’S JUDGMENT AGAINST LYING SO HARSH

BIBLE READING: 1 Samuel 15:1-35
KEY BIBLE VERSE: When Samuel finally found him, Saul greeted him cheerfully. “May the LORD bless you,” he said. “I have carried out the LORD’s command!” “Then what is all the bleating of sheep and lowing of cattle I hear?” Samuel demanded. (1 Samuel 15:13-14)

LYING IS A FORM OF SELF-DECEPTION

Saul thought he had won a great victory over the Amalekites, but God saw it as a great failure because Saul had disobeyed him and then lied to Samuel about the results of the battle. Saul may have thought his lie wouldn’t be detected, or that what he did was not wrong. Saul was deceiving himself.

LYING DESTROYS INTEGRITY

Dishonest people soon begin to believe the lies they construct around themselves. Then they lose the ability to tell the difference between truth and lies. By believing your own lies you deceive yourself, you alienate yourself from God, and you lose credibility in all your relationships. In the long run, honesty wins out.

BIBLE READING: 2 Chronicles 18:1-27
KEY BIBLE VERSE: So King Ahab summoned his prophets, four hundred of them, and asked them, “Should we go to war against Ramoth-gilead or not?” They all replied, “Go ahead, for God will give you a great victory!” (2 Chronicles 18:5)

LYING SOMETIMES LEADS TO INJUSTICE

When you want to please or impress someone, it is tempting to lie to make yourself look good. Ahab’s four hundred prophets did just that, telling Ahab only what he wanted to hear. They were then rewarded for making Ahab happy. Micaiah, however, told the truth and got arrested (18:25-26).

Obeying God doesn’t always protect us from evil consequences. Obedience may, in fact, provoke them. But it is better to suffer from human’s displeasure than from God’s wrath (Matthew 10:28). If you are ridiculed for being honest, remember that this can be a sign that you are indeed doing what is right in God’s eyes (Matthew 5:10-12; Romans 8:17, 35-39).

BIBLE READING: Ephesians 4:17-32
KEY BIBLE VERSE: So put away all falsehood and “tell your neighbor the truth” because we belong to each other. (Ephesians 4:25)

LYING UNDERMINES OUR FREEDOM AND UNITY IN CHRIST

Lying to each other disrupts unity by creating conflicts and destroying trust. It tears down relationships and leads to open warfare in a church. Our old way of life before we believed in Christ, which may have included lying, is completely in the past.

We should put it behind us like old clothes to be thrown away. We first make this choice when we decide to accept Christ’s gift of salvation (2:8-10), and we must consciously renew this commitment every day. We are not to be driven by desire and impulse. We must put on the new role, head in the new direction, and have the new way of thinking that the Holy Spirit gives.
