To be <strong><span class=\"c11\">\u201cblessed\u201d<\/span><\/strong> means<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">that one has been given a gift or a kindness by God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The phrase <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #9b7646;\"><span class=\"c11\" style=\"color: #9b7646;\">\u201chappy is,\u201d<\/span><\/span> or <i><span class=\"c12\" style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #9b7646;\">\u201cblessed is,\u201d<\/span><\/i> appears often in the book of Psalms (used 26 times) and in Proverbs (8 times). It is used 10 times in the other books of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">the Old Testament and 13 times in the Apocrypha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">These Beatitudes describe the person who is righteous, someone who has faith and hope in God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">They are signs of a life lived in relation God\u2019s forgiveness, love, and favor. These blessings apply to the whole person, whether in family<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">life, in worship, in public life, or in one\u2019s inner self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The blessed person is in touch with the fruitfulness of the Creator himself. He or she lives a fulfilled life, life as God intended it to be lived. In the New Testament, <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #9b7646;\"><span class=\"c11\" style=\"color: #9b7646;\">\u201cblessing\u201d<\/span><\/span> is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">mentioned seven times in the book of Revelation, three times in the Epistle to the Romans, and once in John\u2019s Gospel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The idea appears so often in Matthew and Luke that the term <b><span class=\"c12\">\u201cBeatitudes\u201d<\/span><\/b> was invented to describe the way <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">the concept is used in these books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">There are interesting contrasts between Luke\u2019s <strong><span class=\"c11\">\u201csermon on the plain\u201d<\/span> <\/strong>(<b>Luke 6:20-23<\/b>) and Matthew\u2019s <b>\u201cSermon on the Mount\u201d<\/b> (<b>Matthew 5:3-12<\/b>), which are so similar<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">that many scholars believe them to be reports of the same event. In Luke, Jesus pronounces blessings on several different kinds of people immediately<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">after he selects the 12 disciples (<b>Luke 6:12-16<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>20<\/b> And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>21<\/b> Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>22<\/b> Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">out your name as evil, for the Son of man\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>23<\/b> Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">fathers unto the prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>24<\/b> But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>25<\/b> Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>26<\/b> Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Yet the sermon is addressed to the crowd and speaks of the God\u2019s kingdom as a great reversal, in which human social conditions will be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">turned upside-down: <b>the poor will be rich<\/b>, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">So Luke balances four blessings with four woes <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #e2341d;\"><span style=\"color: #e2341d;\">(<span class=\"c11\" style=\"color: #e2341d;\">\u201cWoe to you who are rich,\u201d<\/span><\/span> etc.)<\/span> to add to this sense of contrast. He uses the future tense to suggest that this is what will happen<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">when the kingdom of God has come. In Matthew, the advent of the kingdom has already begun\u2014Jesus uses the present tense. He talks mainly to the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">disciples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span class=\"c9\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-weight: bold; color: #9b7646; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Two of his statements set the agenda for his speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">First, he has not come to destroy but to fulfill the law of Moses (<b>Matthew 5:17<\/b>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Second, it is necessary to have a kind of righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees (<b>5:20<\/b>).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">So these Beatitudes are more concerned with the interior life of the disciples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">These eight Beatitudes describe the qualities of people who belong to Christ\u2019s kingdom and who therefore reflect Christ\u2019s own life. The people and situations that Jesus describes may seem pitiable by human standards, but because of God\u2019s presence in their lives, they are blessed and should be imitated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span class=\"c9\" style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #9b7646; font-size: 14pt; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The Beatitudes 2 This is what he taught them:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>3<\/b> God blesses those who realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>4<\/b> God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>5<\/b> God blesses those who are gentle and lowly, for the whole earth will belong to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>6<\/b> God blesses those who are hungry and thirsty for justice, for they will receive it in full.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>7<\/b> God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>8<\/b> God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>9<\/b> God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>10<\/b> God blesses those who are persecuted because they live for God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>11\u00a0<\/b>God blesses you when you are mocked and persecuted and lied about because you are my followers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>12<\/b> Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted,too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"color: #800000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span class=\"c9\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Teaching about Salt and Light<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>13<\/b> You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">out and trampled underfoot as worthless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>14<\/b> You are the light of the world\u2014like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>15<\/b> Don\u2019t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>16<\/b> In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #008000; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span class=\"c9\">Teaching about the Law<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>17<\/b> Don\u2019t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">fulfill them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>18<\/b> I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God\u2019s law will remain until its purpose is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>19<\/b> So if you break the smallest commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">anyone who obeys God\u2019s laws and teaches them will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>20<\/b> But I warn you\u2014unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees do, you can\u2019t enter the Kingdom<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">of Heaven at all!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"color: #333399; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span class=\"c9\" style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Teaching about Anger<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>21<\/b> You have heard that the law of Moses says, <strong><span class=\"c11\">\u2018Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>22<\/b> But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>23<\/b> So if you are standing before the altar in the Temple, offering a sacrifice to God, and you suddenly remember that someone<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">has something against you,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>24<\/b> leave your sacrifice there beside the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>25<\/b> Come to terms quickly with your enemy before it is too late and you are dragged into court, handed over to an officer, and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">thrown in jail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>26<\/b> I assure you that you won\u2019t be free again until you have paid the last penny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span class=\"c9\" style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\">Teaching about Adultery<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>27<\/b>\u00a0You have heard that the law of Moses says, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>\u2018Do not commit adultery.\u2019<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>28<\/b> But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>29<\/b> So if your eye\u2014even if it is your good eye \u2014causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away.
