\n<\/b> CHAPTER 5<\/strong>
\nMatthew 5:3-11<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What is a beatitude?<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a word easily associated with any of the declarations <\/span>made in the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5:3-11<\/b>, beginning <\/span>with “Blessed are”.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

But, it is also a state of utmost bliss (Latin, <\/strong><\/span>beatitudo.)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When Jesus spoke these beatitudes, he was giving us the <\/span>instructions for living in a state of utmost bliss, or peace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many people can point to these verses and say ‘I’m so there.’ <\/span>Unfortunately, they often miss the mark on the principles behind these<\/span>
\nwonderful verses.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1<\/b> And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a <\/span>mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:<\/span><\/p>\n

2<\/b> and he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,<\/span><\/p>\n

3<\/b> Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the <\/span>kingdom of heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/b> Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be <\/span>comforted.<\/span><\/p>\n

5<\/b> Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the <\/span>earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

6<\/b> Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after <\/span>righteousness: for they shall be filled.<\/span><\/p>\n

7<\/b> Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain <\/span>mercy.<\/span><\/p>\n

8<\/b> Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see <\/span>God.<\/span><\/p>\n

9<\/b> Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called <\/span>the children of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

10<\/b> Blessed are they which are persecuted for <\/span>righteousness\u2019 sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

11<\/b> Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and <\/span>persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my<\/span>
\nsake.<\/span><\/p>\n

12<\/b> Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your <\/span>reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.<\/span>
\nJesus teaches about salt and light<\/span><\/p>\n

13<\/b> Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have <\/span>lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for<\/span>
\nnothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.<\/span><\/p>\n

14<\/b> Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on <\/span>an hill cannot be hid.<\/span><\/p>\n

15<\/b> Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a <\/span>bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the<\/span>
\nhouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

16<\/b> Let your light so shine before men, that they may <\/span>see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about the Law<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/b>Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the <\/span>prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.<\/span><\/p>\n

18<\/b> For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth <\/span>pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be <\/span>fulfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n

19\u00a0<\/b>Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least <\/span>commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the<\/span>
\nkingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be <\/span>called great in the kingdom of heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

20<\/b> For I say unto you, That except your righteousness <\/span>shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no<\/span>
\ncase enter into the kingdom of heaven.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about anger<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

21<\/b> Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, <\/span>Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the <\/span>judgment:<\/span><\/p>\n

22<\/b> but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his <\/span>brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever<\/span>
\nshall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but <\/span>whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

23<\/b> Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and <\/span>there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;<\/span><\/p>\n

24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; <\/span>first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.<\/span><\/p>\n

25<\/b> Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art <\/span>in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the<\/span>
\njudge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into <\/span>prison.<\/span><\/p>\n

26<\/b> Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come <\/span>out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about lust<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

27<\/b> Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, <\/span>Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28\u00a0but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh<\/span>
\non a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his <\/span>heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

29<\/b> And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and <\/span>cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members<\/span>
\nshould perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

30<\/b> And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and <\/span>cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members<\/span>
\nshould perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about divorce<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

31<\/b> It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his <\/span>wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:<\/span><\/p>\n

32<\/b> but I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away <\/span>his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit<\/span>
\nadultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth <\/span>adultery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about vows<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

33<\/b> Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them <\/span>of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord<\/span>
\nthine oaths:<\/span><\/p>\n

34<\/b> but I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by <\/span>heaven; for it is God\u2019s throne:<\/span><\/p>\n

35<\/b> nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither <\/span>by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.<\/span><\/p>\n

36<\/b> Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou <\/span>canst not make one hair white or black.<\/span><\/p>\n

37<\/b> But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: <\/span>for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Jesus teaches about<\/span>
\nretaliation<\/span><\/p>\n

38<\/b> Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an <\/span>eye, and a tooth for a tooth:<\/span><\/p>\n

39<\/b> but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but <\/span>whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other<\/span>
\nalso.<\/span><\/p>\n

40<\/b> And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take <\/span>away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.<\/span><\/p>\n

41<\/b> And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go <\/span>with him twain.<\/span><\/p>\n

42<\/b> Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that <\/span>would borrow of thee turn not thou away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus teaches about loving enemies<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

43<\/b> Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt <\/span>love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n

44<\/b> But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them <\/span>that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which<\/span>
\ndespitefully use you, and persecute you;<\/span><\/p>\n

45<\/b> that ye may be the children of your Father which is <\/span>in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and<\/span>
\nsendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.<\/span><\/p>\n

46<\/b> For if ye love them which love you, what reward have <\/span>ye? do not even the publicans the same?<\/span><\/p>\n

47<\/b> And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more <\/span>than others? do not even the publicans so?<\/span><\/p>\n

48<\/b> Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which <\/span>is in heaven is perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus gives the beatitudes<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Luke 6:17 – 30<\/b><\/span>
\n17<\/b> And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company <\/span>of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and<\/span>
\nJerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, <\/span>and to be healed of their diseases;<\/span><\/p>\n

18<\/b> and they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and <\/span>they were healed.<\/span><\/p>\n

19<\/b> And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for <\/span>there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.<\/span><\/p>\n

20<\/b> And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and <\/span>said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

21<\/b> Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be <\/span>filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

22<\/b> Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when <\/span>they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast <\/span>out your name as evil, for the Son of man\u2019s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n

23<\/b> Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, <\/span>behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their <\/span>fathers unto the prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n

24<\/b> But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received <\/span>your consolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

25<\/b> Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe <\/span>unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.<\/span><\/p>\n

26<\/b> Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! <\/span>for so did their fathers to the false prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n

24<\/b> But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received <\/span>your consolation.<\/span><\/p>\n

27<\/b> But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do <\/span>good to them which hate you,<\/span><\/p>\n
