God is actually referred to by a number of Divine Names throughout\u00a0The Holy Bible. The many translators for the various Bible versions that we now have available also sometimes differ in their choice of words to represent these original\u00a0Hebrew words of the Old Testament \u00a0and\u00a0Greek words of the New Testament .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><b>Elohim<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Elohim<\/strong>, from the Hebrew pronounced<strong>\u00a0<i>el-oh-heem<\/i><\/strong>, is the most frequently recorded name for God, more than 2,500 times in the Old Testament. Elohim is actually the plural form of its root word, but singular in usage &#8211; after all, there is only\u00a0<i>one<\/i>\u00a0God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Examples where <strong>Elohim<\/strong> was translated as God:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> <strong>(Genesis 1:1 KJV)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><strong> (Genesis 1:26 KJV)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><b>The Tetragram<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The second most common Name for God is the <strong>YHVH<\/strong>, or<strong> &#8220;Tetragram&#8221;<\/strong> as it has been called. It is shown in the illustration along with the names of the Hebrew letters and their approximate sounds (note that Hebrew is written\u00a0<i>right to left<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The ancient pronunciation of the <strong>YHVH<\/strong> is uncertain, and there have been a number of interpretations. The most common is <strong>&#8220;Jehovah,&#8221;<\/strong> which some Bibles use in their translation, while others render the <strong>YHVH<\/strong> as <strong>&#8220;Lord.&#8221; <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">For example, for <strong>Exodus 20:2-3<\/strong>, the\u00a0<i>American Standard Version<\/i>\u00a0has, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;I Am Jehovah thy God, Who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.\u00a0Thou shalt have no other gods before Me,&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> while the\u00a0<i>King James Version<\/i>\u00a0has, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;I Am The Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">There are also a number of Names which use the <strong>YHVH<\/strong> in combination. Examples, using the <strong>&#8220;Jehovah&#8221;<\/strong> interpretation:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><i>Jehovah-ropheka<\/i>,<\/strong><\/span> <strong>&#8220;Jehovah that heals&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>(Exodus 15:26)<\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><i>Jehovah-meqaddeshkem<\/i><\/strong><\/span>, <strong>&#8220;Jehovah Who sanctifies you&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>(Exodus 31:13)<\/strong>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><i>Jehovah-tsabaoth<\/i><\/strong><\/span>, <strong>&#8220;Jehovah of hosts&#8221; (1 Samuel 1:3)<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;<i>Jehovah-elyon<\/i>,<\/strong> &#8220;Jehovah Most High (Psalm 7:17),\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><i>Jehovah-roi<\/i>,<\/strong><\/span> <strong>&#8220;Jehovah my shepherd<\/strong> <strong>(Psalm 23:1)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><b>El<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">El is used over 200 times as a Name for God, often in combination as <strong>El, Eloah and Elyon<\/strong>. Many of the faithful people of God had it in their name e.g.\u00a0<strong><i>El<\/i>ijah<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>(&#8220;The Lord is God&#8221;)<\/strong><\/span>, Dani<i>el<\/i>\u00a0(<strong>&#8220;The Lord is my Judge&#8221;<\/strong>). Another name for\u00a0Jesus Christ\u00a0was <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Immamu<i>el<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(<strong>Matthew 1:23<\/strong>) which means <strong>&#8220;The Lord is with us.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><b>Shaddai<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Shaddai<\/strong> is found almost 50 times in the Old Testament, and is usually translated as\u00a0<strong><i>Almighty<\/i><\/strong>. It was first recorded when God spoke to Abraham: <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, The Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I Am the Almighty God; walk before Me, and be thou perfect. And I will make My covenant between Me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> <strong>(Genesis 17:1-2 KJV)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #008000;\"><b>Theos<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In the New Testament <strong>&#8220;God&#8221;<\/strong> is used for the original Greek word\u00a0<strong><i>Theos<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Examples of Translations<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">And Moses\u00a0said unto God, <strong>&#8220;Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, &#8216;The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you&#8217;; and they shall say to me, &#8216;What is His Name?&#8217;, what shall I say unto them?&#8221;<\/strong> And God said unto Moses, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;I AM THAT I AM:,&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> and He said, <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.&#8221; And God said moreover unto Moses, &#8220;Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of\u00a0Abraham, the God of\u00a0Isaac, and the God of\u00a0Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is My Name for ever, and this is My memorial unto all generations.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> <strong>(Exodus 3:13-15)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>&#8220;For thou shalt worship no other god: for The Lord, whose Name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> <strong>(Exodus 34:14-15 KJV)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>&#8220;Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.
