CHAPTER 7
\nWisdom for Life<\/span><\/p>\n

1\u00a0A good reputation is more valuable than the most expensive perfume. In the same way, the day you die is better than the day you are born.<\/span><\/p>\n

2\u00a0It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and you should think about it while there is still time.<\/span><\/p>\n

3\u00a0Sorrow is better than laughter, for sadness has a refining influence on us.<\/span><\/p>\n

4\u00a0A wise person thinks much about death, while the fool thinks only about having a good time now.<\/span>
\n5\u00a0It is better to be criticized by a wise person than to be praised by a fool!<\/span><\/p>\n

6\u00a0Indeed, a fool\u2019s laughter is quickly gone, like thorns crackling in a fire. This also is meaningless.<\/span><\/p>\n

7\u00a0Extortion turns wise people into fools, and bribes corrupt the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride.<\/span><\/p>\n

9\u00a0Don\u2019t be quick-tempered, for anger is the friend of fools.<\/span><\/p>\n

10\u00a0Don\u2019t long for \u201cthe good old days,\u201d<\/span> for you don\u2019t know whether they were any better than today.<\/span><\/p>\n

11\u00a0Being wise is as good as being rich; in fact, it is better.<\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0Wisdom or money can get you almost anything, but it\u2019s important to know that only wisdom can save your life.<\/span><\/p>\n

13\u00a0Notice the way God does things; then fall into line. Don\u2019t fight the ways of God, for who can straighten out what he has made crooked?<\/span><\/p>\n

14\u00a0Enjoy prosperity while you can. But when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. That way you will realize that nothing is certain in this life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Limits of Human Wisdom<\/span><\/p>\n

15\u00a0In this meaningless life, I have seen everything, including the fact that some good people die young and some wicked people live on and on.<\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0So don\u2019t be too good or too wise! Why destroy yourself?<\/span><\/p>\n

17\u00a0On the other hand, don\u2019t be too wicked either\u2014don\u2019t be a fool! Why should you die before your time?<\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0So try to walk a middle course\u2014but those who fear God will succeed either way.<\/span><\/p>\n

19\u00a0A wise person is stronger than the ten leading citizens of a town!<\/span><\/p>\n

20\u00a0There is not a single person in all the earth who is always good and never sins.<\/span><\/p>\n

21\u00a0Don\u2019t eavesdrop on others\u2014you may hear your servant laughing at you.<\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0For you know how often you yourself have laughed at others.<\/span><\/p>\n

23\u00a0All along I have tried my best to let wisdom guide my thoughts and actions. I said to myself, \u201cI am determined to be wise.\u201d<\/span> But it didn\u2019t really work.<\/span><\/p>\n

24\u00a0Wisdom is always distant and very difficult to find.<\/span><\/p>\n

25\u00a0I searched everywhere, determined to find wisdom and to understand the reason for things. I was determined to prove to myself that wickedness is stupid and that foolishness is madness.<\/span><\/p>\n

26\u00a0I discovered that a seductive woman is more bitter than death. Her passion is a trap, and her soft hands will bind you. Those who please God will escape from her, but sinners will be caught in her snare.<\/span><\/p>\n

27\u00a0\u201cThis is my conclusion,\u201d<\/span> says the Teacher. \u201cI came to this result after looking into the matter from every possible angle.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

28\u00a0Just one out of every thousand men I interviewed can be said to be upright, but not one woman!<\/span><\/p>\n

29\u00a0I discovered that God created people to be upright, but they have each turned to follow their own downward path.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
