He told him to circumcise every make 8 years and older including himself. (<b>Genesis 17:10-14<\/b>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Blood was shed, but it&#8217;s referred to as:\u00a0<b>&#8220;The Fountain of Life.&#8221;<\/b>\u00a0Which the place from which the seeds fear the future generation would come from &#8211; and the circumcision was a sign there was a covenant between God and Abraham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c11 c7\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Covenant of Circumcision<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">After Abram had sojourned in the land of promise twenty-four years, the Lord made a covenant with him and changed his name to Abraham (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/genesis\/12-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 12:4<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/genesis\/12-5.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 12:5<\/a>\u00a0;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/passage\/?q=Genesis+17:1-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 17:1-5<\/a>\u00a0). The Lord proposed to make of him a great nation and to perpetuate the covenant through his offspring (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/genesis\/17-6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 17:6<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/genesis\/17-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 17:7<\/a>\u00a0). Birth and purchase were the conditions of membership in this covenant (\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/genesis\/12-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 12:13<\/a>\u00a0). Of circumcision:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(a) It was a visible mark in the flesh. (b) It affected only the males of Abraham&#8217;s family. (c) The children were circumcised on the eighth day. (d) The uncircumcised were to be cut off from the covenant (\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/passage\/?q=Genesis+17:6-14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis 17:6-14<\/a>\u00a0).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Religious male circumcision\u00a0generally occurs shortly after birth, during childhood or around puberty as part of a\u00a0rite of passage.\u00a0Circumcision\u00a0is most prevalent in the religions of\u00a0Judaism,\u00a0Islam, and some\u00a0Christian denominations\u00a0such as the\u00a0Coptic Orthodox Church,\u00a0the\u00a0Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and the\u00a0Eritrean Orthodox Church.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Many countries with majorities of Christian adherents have low circumcision rates (as in\u00a0Europe\u00a0and\u00a0South America), while both religious and non-religious circumcision is common in some predominantly\u00a0Christian\u00a0countries such as the United States,\u00a0and the Philippines\u00a0and in\u00a0North Africa\u00a0and\u00a0West Africa. It is common in countries such as\u00a0Cameroon,\u00a0the\u00a0Democratic Republic of the Congo,\u00a0Ethiopia,\u00a0Eritrea,\u00a0Ghana,\u00a0Liberia,Nigeria\u00a0and\u00a0Kenya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Circumcision is also widely practiced among Christians from South Korea, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Israel, and North Africa.\u00a0Circumcision rates in Oceania\u00a0were high but are now relatively low.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Circumcision practiced as a religious rite is found in texts of the\u00a0Hebrew Bible, as part of the\u00a0Abrahamic covenant, such as in\u00a0Genesis\u00a017,\u00a0and is therefore practiced by Jews and Muslims, which are both\u00a0Abrahamic religions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">While the\u00a0Roman Catholic Church\u00a0has condemned religious circumcision for its members, and currently maintains a neutral position on the practice of non-religious circumcision,\u00a0it is customary in\u00a0Coptic Christianity,\u00a0Ethiopian Orthodox Church\u00a0and\u00a0Eritrean Orthodox Church, which keep it as a rite of passage.\u00a0In\u00a0Classical civilization, the\u00a0foreskin\u00a0was positively valued both from\u00a0Ancient Greeks\u00a0and\u00a0Romans;\u00a0Greek and Roman attempts to abolish ritual circumcision were prompted mostly by\u00a0humanitarian concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">There are numerous references to religious male circumcision in the Hebrew Bible. Circumcision was enjoined upon the biblical patriarch Abraham, his descendants and their slaves as <strong>&#8220;a token of the covenant&#8221;<\/strong> concluded with him by God for all generations, an <strong>&#8220;everlasting covenant&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>(Genesis 17:13)<\/strong>, thus it is commonly observed by two (Judaism and Islam) of the Abrahamic religions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The penalty of non-observance was kareth (Hebrew: <strong>&#8220;cutting off&#8221;<\/strong>) from the people <strong>(Genesis 17:10\u201314, 21:4; Leviticus 12:3)<\/strong>. Non-Israelite&#8217;s had to undergo circumcision before they could be allowed to take part in the feast of Passover <strong>(Exodus 12:48).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It was <strong>&#8220;a reproach&#8221;<\/strong> for an Israelite to be uncircumcised <strong>(Joshua 5:9)<\/strong>. The name arelim <strong>(&#8220;uncircumcised&#8221;)<\/strong> became an opprobrious term, especially a pejorative name for the Philistines, who might have been of Greek origin, in the context of the fierce wars recounted in the First Book of <strong>Samuel (14:6, 31:4)<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">When the general (and future king) David wanted to marry King Saul&#8217;s daughter, the King required a grisly <strong>&#8220;dowry&#8221;<\/strong> of a hundred Philistine foreskins. David went further: <strong>&#8220;and David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king&#8217;s son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife&#8221; (1 Samuel 18:25).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>&#8220;Uncircumcised&#8221;<\/strong> is used in conjunction with tame (<strong>&#8220;unpure&#8221;<\/strong>) for heathen <strong>(Isaiah 52:1)<\/strong>. The word arel<strong> (&#8220;uncircumcised&#8221;)<\/strong> is also employed for <strong>&#8220;impermeable&#8221;<\/strong> <strong>(Leviticus 26:41<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;their uncircumcised hearts&#8221;<\/strong>; compare <strong>Jeremiah 9:25; Ezekiel 44:7\u20139)<\/strong>; it is also applied to the first three years&#8217; fruit of a tree, which is forbidden <strong>(Leviticus 19:23)<\/strong>. <strong>&#8220;The Philistines, more than any other nation, are regularly called uncircumised&#8221;<\/strong> in the Hebrew Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">However, the Israelite&#8217;s born in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt apparently did not carry out the practice of circumcision. According to <strong>Joshua 5:2\u20139<\/strong>, <strong>&#8220;all the people that came out&#8221;<\/strong> of Egypt were circumcised, but those <strong>&#8220;born in the wilderness&#8221;<\/strong> were not. In any case, we are told that Joshua, before the celebration of the Passover, had them circumcised at Gilgal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Hebrew Bible contains several narratives in which circumcision is mentioned. There is the circumcision and massacre of the Shechemites<strong> (Genesis 34:1\u201335:5)<\/strong>, the hundred foreskin dowry<strong> (1 Samuel 18:25\u201327)<\/strong> and the story of the Lord threatening to kill Moses, and being placated by Zipporah&#8217;s circumcision of their son <strong>(Exodus 4:24\u201326)<\/strong>, and the circumcision at Gilgal of <strong>Joshua<\/strong> 5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">There is another sense in which the term <strong>&#8220;circumcise&#8221;<\/strong> is used in the Hebrew Bible.
