“Holy Spirit, Truth Devine”<\/span><\/p>\n

Samuel Longfellow (1819\u20131892) HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW<\/b>, one of the first great American poets, is renowned for works like \u201cEvangeline,\u201d<\/b> \u201cThe Song of Hiawatha,\u201d<\/b> and \u201cTales of a Wayside Inn.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

About the same time that he was writing \u201cTales of a Wayside Inn,\u201d<\/b> his brother, Samuel Longfellow, was compiling a hymnbook.<\/p>\n

In this hymnal, Samuel included a hymn he had recently written, \u201cHoly Spirit, Truth Divine.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Though Samuel was a minister in the Unitarian church, as he grew older he refused to be called a Unitarian.<\/p>\n

The hymn itself is one that is acceptable to all Christians. The Holy Spirit is praised as truth, love, power, and right.<\/p>\n

The last stanza reminds us of the words in the Gospel of John where it says that the Holy Spirit would convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.<\/p>\n

The Spirit does carry on this ministry within us as that \u201cstill, small voice\u201d<\/b> that shows us the way. As Longfellow wrote, may we pray that the Holy Spirit reign as king within our consciences.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHoly Spirit, Truth divine,
\nDawn upon this soul of mine;
\nWord of God and inward light,
\nWake my spirit, clear my sight.<\/p>\n

Holy Spirit, Love divine,
\nGlow within this heart of mine;
\nKindle every high desire;
\nPerish self in Thy pure fire.<\/p>\n

Holy Spirit, Power divine,
\nFill and nerve this will of mine;
\nBy Thee may I strongly live,
\nBravely hear and nobly strive.<\/p>\n

Holy Spirit, Right divine,
\nKing within my conscience reign;
\nBe my Lord, and I shall be
\nFirmly bound, forever free.<\/span><\/p>\n
