A demon is an angel who rebelled against God by following Satan’s commands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Demons carry out Satan’s commands and they try to get people to disobey God’s will.<\/span><\/p>\n

When demons actually enter the lives of human beings, this is called demon possession. There are many examples of demon possession in the Bible, and a big part of Jesus’ work on earth involved healing people of the demons that controlled them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just Who Demons Are<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The English word “demon”<\/span><\/strong> comes from the Greek word daimon, which means “a false deity”<\/span> 1 Corinthians 10:20<\/b>. Any deity other than the one true God is a spirit opposed to him. Because of this, such a spirit is an evil spirit, or a demon. The word “demon”<\/strong> does not appear in the King James Version, which mistranslates daimon as “devil.”<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

There is only one devil, who is known by a variety of names and titles in the Bible. The devil is the ruler of all the other demons, who are subject to him. There are many times in the Bible when the word “spirit”<\/span><\/strong> is used for demon, along with a descriptive phrase.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, the Bible mentions “evil spirit”<\/span> Acts 19:12-13<\/b>, “unclean spirit”<\/span> Matthew 10:1, Mark 1:23, Mark 1:26, and Acts 5:16<\/b>, “spirit of infirmity”<\/span><\/b> Luke 13:11<\/b>, and “dumb and deaf spirit”<\/span> Mark 9:25<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Evil spirits might be identified by their specific role or function. Some demons possess the spirit of murder, suicide, fear, or lying. This associates them with various sins or attitudes that are contrary to the will of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Hebrew Old Testament there is no word for “demon”<\/span><\/strong> In some references, the term “evil spirit”<\/span><\/strong> occurs Judges 9:23<\/b>, 1 Samuel 16:14-23<\/b>, 1 Samuel 18:10<\/b>, and 1 Samuel 19:9<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A specific powerful demon referred to in the Old Testament is “the prince of the kingdom of Persia”<\/span><\/strong> This demon hindered the archangel Gabriel from coming to bring information to Daniel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this, the archangel Michael came to Gabriel’s assistance Daniel 10:13<\/b>. We do not know the exact number of demons. It appears that there are a vast number, perhaps so many that they cannot be counted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Revelation 12:4<\/b> suggests that about one-third of the angels were led astray by Satan. This means that the angels of heaven outnumber Satan’s powers by two to one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ephesians 6:12<\/b> suggests that there is an order or rank of demons. There are “principalities,”<\/span><\/strong> “powers,”<\/b> “world rulers of this present darkness,”<\/b><\/span> and “spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places”<\/span><\/strong> Ephesians 6:12<\/b>. Demons are created beings. They are immortal, and they cannot reconcile their previous relationship with God.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have great powers when they are compared to humans, but they cannot match the power of God. God has given us authority over them, and Christians who believe in the power of Jesus cannot be conquered by the power of demons.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT DEMONS DO<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Angels were created to worship and praise God, to serve him, and to act as his messengers. The Bible states that they are “spirits sent from God to care for those who will receive salvation”<\/span><\/strong> Hebrews 1:14<\/b>. Demons have a similar function, but they serve a different master. They are ruled by Satan, whom they serve out of fear. Demons work in the lives of human beings, but their purpose is to carry out the schemes of Satan and to oppose God.<\/span><\/p>\n

Demons tempt, deceive, and delude people in the hopes of bringing them to eternal damnation. They constantly attack, oppress, and accuse<\/span> the people of God. Since Satan cannot be everywhere at the same time, he uses his demons to carry out different tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, in the parable of the sower Matthew 13:3-9, Mark 4:1-20<\/b> and Luke 8:4-15<\/b> demons snatch away the word before it can take root Mark 4:15<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many times, Satan causes some people to fall away from God before they have made a genuine commitment Mark 4:17<\/b>. By tempting people with the desire for material things, Satan chokes the Word of God so that no fruit can be produced Mark 4:19<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Basically, demons operate according to the pattern set by Satan in his temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden.<\/span><\/p>\n
