There are more of these miracles than <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">any other type. A section in Matthew is devoted to a sequence of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">healings: (<b>Matthew 8:1-9:34<\/b>), a leper, a centurion\u2019s servant, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Peter\u2019s mother-in-law, a demon-possessed person, a paralyzed person, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">a woman with a hemorrhage, blind men, and a man who was mute. In <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">addition, Jairus\u2019 daughter was raised from the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This concentration of healings focuses on Jesus as a miracle worker, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">but throughout the Gospels there is no suggestion that Jesus healed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">by magical means. In some cases an individual\u2019s faith was<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">acknowledged (<b>8:10<\/b>; <b>9:22<\/b>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In at least one incident, the healing was accompanied <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">by an announcement of the forgiveness of the sins of the one healed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>9:2<\/b>; <b>Mark 2:5<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This shows that Jesus considered a person\u2019s spiritual needs to be of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">greater consequence than the physical problems. Jesus gives us an<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">example to follow in how to truly help and bless people by meeting <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">their spiritual needs. At that time, people held a widespread belief<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">in the powerful influence of evil spirits over human lives. Jesus is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">seen exercising his power of exorcism over demons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus\u2019 ministry was set in an atmosphere of spiritual conflict, so <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the confrontations between the forces of darkness and the Light of<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the World were to be expected. Those who explain away these cases of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">demon-possession in psychiatric terms miss this key feature of Jesus\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">ministry. Each time he exorcised a demon, he was demonstrating a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">victory, which reached its most dramatic expression in his victory<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">over death at his resurrection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In addition to the healing miracles in this early section, one nature <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">miracle is recorded, that of the stilling of the storm (<b>Matthew&lt; 8:23-27<\/b>; <b>Mark 4:35-41<\/b>; <b>Luke 8:22-25<\/b>). There are several notices to this <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">effect (<b>Matthew 4:23-25<\/b>; <b>Mark 3:7-8<\/b>). This popularity <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">showed no appreciation of the spiritual purpose of Jesus\u2019 mission <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Luke 13:17<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Nevertheless, it stands in stark contrast to the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">nit-picking opposition of the religious leaders, who even plotted to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">kill Jesus in the early period of his ministry (<b>Mark 3:6<\/b>). <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus and the religious leaders often clashed over the observance of<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the Sabbath (<b>Matthew 12:1-14<\/b>; <b>Luke 13:10-17<\/b>; <b>John 5:9-18<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus adopted a more human-centered view than the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">strict interpretation of some other religious leaders\u2014as in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">instances when he was criticized for healing on the Sabbath even <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">though the Jewish law allowed the rescuing of trapped animals on the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Sabbath (<b>Matthew 12:11<\/b>; <b>Luke 13:15<\/b>). To the Pharisees, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus was a lawbreaker. They feared that it would undermine their <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">authority if Jesus\u2019 teaching were permitted to influence popular <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: none;\">\n<p class=\"c15\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/heavens-beauty.info\/images\/Christwithhisdisciples.jpg\" alt=\"PREPARING THE TWELVE\" width=\"335\" height=\"249\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong><span class=\"c7\" style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">PREPARING THE TWELVE<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The synoptic Gospels supply lists of the names of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">twelve apostles (<b>Matthew 10:2-4<\/b>; <b>Mark 3:16-19<\/b>; <b>Luke 6:14-16<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Both Matthew and Mark name them in the context of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">their exercising authority over evil spirits, showing that these men <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">were being called to enter the same spiritual conflict as Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The synoptic Gospels also give details of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">instructions Jesus gave to these disciples before sending them to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">minister in Israel (<b>Matthew 10:5-42<\/b>; <b>Mark 6:7-13<\/b>; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Luke 9:1-6<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Matthew included material that appears in a different context in Mark <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">and Luke, but he still shows the concern of Jesus to prepare his<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples for their future work. They were to proclaim the kingdom as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he had done, but they were not to expect that all would respond to<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">it. They were warned about coming hostility and even persecution. After John the Baptist was imprisoned by Herod because of his condemnation of Herod\u2019s marriage to Herodias, his brother\u2019s wife (<b>Matthew 14:3-4<\/b>), John began to have doubts about Jesus (<b>11:1-19<\/b>; <b>Luke 7:18-35<\/b>).<\/p>\n<p>He may have been expecting Jesus, if he really was the Messiah, to come to his rescue. When John sent his disciples to Jesus to express his doubts, Jesus took the opportunity to tell the crowds of the greatness of John the Baptist. John\u2019s Gospel recorded a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">controversy over the keeping of the Sabbath that arose when a lame<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">man was healed on that day (<b>John 5:1-18<\/b>). It shows once again <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">that the law of the Sabbath was regarded by the Pharisees as of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">greater importance than concern for the physical welfare of the lame <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This was typical of the Jewish approach and led at once to a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">persecuting attitude toward Jesus, particularly because he claimed to<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">be doing the work of God. A similar conflict arose after Jesus\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples had plucked grain in the fields on the Sabbath day<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 12:1-8<\/b>). The Pharisees assumed that this act was work <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">and saw it as a reason enough to plot to destroy Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">After this event, he healed a paralyzed man on the same Sabbath day <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>12:9-14<\/b>). The Jewish leaders clearly regarded him as a direct<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">threat to their position among the people. The rising opposition did <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">not discourage Jesus from further healings (<b>Matthew 12:15-32<\/b>),<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">which Matthew shows as the fulfillment of Scripture. But when Jesus <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">healed a blind and mute demon-possessed man, the Pharisees charged<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">him with casting out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">demons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus told them that to blaspheme the Holy Spirit was an unforgivable <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">sin. This incident not only brings out the perversity of the<\/span>&gt; <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">religious leaders but also shows that the ministry of Jesus was under <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the direct control of the Spirit. Other notable miracles were the<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">healing of the centurion\u2019s servant, as recorded by Luke (<b>Luke 7:1-10<\/b>), and the raising from the dead of the widow\u2019s son at Nain<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>7:11-17<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The former of these is notable because of the remarkable faith of a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Gentile. Another example of the Pharisees\u2019 criticism was when Jesus<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">attended a meal in Simon the Pharisee\u2019s house (<b>Luke 7:36-50<\/b>). <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">His host had not provided for the usual courtesies toward guests and<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">yet was critical of Jesus for allowing an immoral woman to wash his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">feet with tears, dry them with her hair, and anoint them with<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">ointment. There is no doubt that most of Simon\u2019s colleagues would <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">have shared his reaction, but Jesus did not stop the woman because he<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">knew she was motivated by love. He told Simon a parable to press home <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">his point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">John records two visits by Jesus to Jerusalem. These are difficult to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">date, but they probably occurred during the early period of the<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">ministry. He attended the Feast of Tabernacles (<b>John 7:2<\/b>) and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the Feast of Dedication (<b>10:22<\/b>). At these times, Jesus taught<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">in the temple area and debated with the religious leaders. The chief <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">priests became alarmed at his presence and sent officers to arrest<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">him (<b>7:32<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">They were unable to do so; instead, they themselves were captivated <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">by his teachings. More discussions with the Jewish leaders followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">They charged Jesus with being demon-possessed (<b>8:48<\/b>). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Both in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">this case and in the event of the healing of the blind man<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>9<\/b>), the hostility of the Jewish leaders toward Jesus is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">clear. Luke tends to preserve parables of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">a different kind that are not specially linked to the kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Mark has the least number of parables among the synoptic Gospels, but <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">his writing shows little interest in Jesus as a teacher. John does <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">not relate any parables, although he does preserve two allegories\u2014the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Sheepfold and the Vine\u2014which could be regarded as extended <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">parables.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The parable was a favorite teaching form of Jesus. Jesus used <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">parables even in the middle of his more formal sermons. The parable<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">was valuable because everyone can relate to a story and still be <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">challenged. The people of his hometown proved so hostile <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">that he could perform very few miracles there (<b>Matthew 13:53-58<\/b>; <b>Mark 6:1-6<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This incident is important because it shows that faith <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">was especially necessary for people to receive his healing <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">miracles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The one miracle performed by Jesus that all four <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Gospels describe is the feeding of the 5,000 (<b>Matthew 14:13-21<\/b>; <b>Mark 6:30-44<\/b>; <b>Luke 9:10-17<\/b>; <b>John 6:1-15<\/b>). This occasion shows the great popularity of Jesus at <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">this stage of his ministry. It also reveals that he was mindful of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the physical needs of people. After this miracle, some wanted to make <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus king. Another miracle closely linked with this is <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">when Jesus walked on the water, demonstrating his power in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">natural world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Many have sought to rationalize the event by supposing that Jesus was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">really walking on the shore, and that the disciples did not realize<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">this in the haze. But this miracle is no more extraordinary than the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">massive multiplication of loaves and fishes, nor is it inconceivable<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">if the miracle worker was all that he claimed to be. It has been said <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">that Jesus was either telling the truth, lying incessantly, or was<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">criminally insane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">These are the three options\u2014with two and three being a direct <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">contradiction to everything else we know about Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: none;\">\n<p class=\"c15\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/heavens-beauty.info\/images\/tyre.png\" alt=\"LEAVING NORTHERN GALILEE\" align=\"left\" \/> <b><span class=\"c7\">LEAVING NORTHERN GALILEE<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c20\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus spent a brief time in the region of Tyre and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Sidon, where he performed further healings and made it clear that his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">main mission was to the house of Israel (<b>Matthew 15:21-28<\/b>). He<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">then moved on to Caesarea Philippi; this was the turning point of his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">ministry (<b>16:13-20<\/b>; <b>Mark 8:27-38<\/b>; <b>Luke 9:18-27<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It was there that Jesus asked his disciples: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span class=\"c18\">\u201cWho do people say the Son of Man is?\u201d<\/span> This caused Peter to <\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">confess: <span class=\"c19\">\u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c20\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This impressive confession led Jesus to promise that <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he would build his church on <strong><span class=\"c21\">\u201cthis rock.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">There has been much discussion about the meaning of this saying. It <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">is open to some doubt whether Jesus intended to build his church on <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Peter, on his confession, or on Peter\u2019s making the confession.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Historically, Peter was the instrument God used for the entrance into <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the church of both Jews and Gentiles (<b>Acts 2; 10<\/b>). There is no<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">doubt about Jesus\u2019 intention to found a church, since the word occurs <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">again in <b>Matthew 18:17<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Despite the glorious revelation of Jesus on this occasion, he took it <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">as an opportunity to begin to inform his disciples of his death and<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">resurrection (<b>16:21-23<\/b>). This revelation of Jesus was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">considerably reinforced by the event known as the Transfiguration,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">when Jesus was changed in appearance in the presence of three of his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples (<b>Matthew 17:1-8<\/b>). It was natural for them to want to<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">keep this glorious vision of Jesus for themselves, but the vision <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">vanished as rapidly as it came.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Its purpose was evidently to show the three leading disciples <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">something of the nature of Jesus, which was hidden by his normal<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">human form. A further feature of the vision was the appearance with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus of Moses and Elijah, representatives of the Law and the<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Prophets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">After the Transfiguration, Jesus made two predictions concerning his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">death. These announcements were confusing to the disciples. In<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Matthew 16<\/strong>, when Jesus mentioned his death, Peter attempted to rebuke <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus and was rebuked by Jesus in kind. When Jesus mentioned his<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">death again, in <strong>17, Matthew<\/strong> noted that the disciples were greatly <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">distressed (<b>17:23<\/b>), while Mark and Luke mentioned the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples\u2019 lack of understanding (<b>Mark 9:32<\/b>; <b>Luke 9:45<\/b>).<\/span> <br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus was approaching the cross with no support from those closest to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">him. It is not surprising that when the hour arrived they all<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">betrayed him. After the Transfiguration revealed that Jesus was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">greater than Moses and Elijah and in fact was the beloved Son of God,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he was asked to pay the temple tax (<b>Matthew 17:24-27<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This incident illustrates the attitude of Jesus toward the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">authorities and practical responsibilities. He paid the tax, although <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">he did not acknowledge any obligation to do so. The method of payment <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">was extraordinary, for it involved the miracle of the coin in the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c20\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">But the greater importance of the incident is Jesus\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">independence from the Jewish law. Luke devotes more than half his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Gospel to the period that begins with Jesus leaving Galilee and ends <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">with his death and resurrection in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In this section of his Gospel, Luke introduces a great deal of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">material that does not occur elsewhere. We can do no more than<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">summarize some of the more striking items that throw light on the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">life of Jesus. In addition to the mission of the Twelve, Luke records<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the mission of the Seventy (or Seventy-two\u2014<b>Luke 10:17-20<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Luke records special parables in this section like the Good Samaritan <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>10:29-37<\/b>), the lost sheep (<b>15:3-7<\/b>), the lost coin <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>15:8-10<\/b>), and the prodigal son (<b>15:11-32<\/b>). As Jesus <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">moved toward Jerusalem, he was concerned with developing the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">spiritual life of his disciples. He was mindful of the fact that he <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">would not be with them long and wished to prepare them for the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">He taught them about prayer (<b>11:1-13<\/b>), the Father\u2019s care for <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">them (<b>12:13-34<\/b>), and preparation for the coming of the Son of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Man (<b>12:35-56<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: none;\">\n<p class=\"c15\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"art-preview-selected alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/oneyearbibleimages.com\/jesus_falls.jpg\" alt=\"ON THE WAY TO JERUSALEM\" width=\"244\" height=\"349\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"c7\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">ON THE WAY TO JERUSALEM<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">On the approach to Jerusalem, Jesus visited both <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jericho and Bethany. At Jericho he healed Bartimaeus (<b>Luke 18:35-43<\/b>) and had a fruitful encounter with Zacchaeus, who <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">reformed his ways as a tax collector (<b>19:1-10<\/b>). Bethany was <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the home of Mary, Martha, and their brother, Lazarus, whom Jesus had <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">raised from the dead (<b>John 11<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus spent his remaining days in Jerusalem but returned each night <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">to stay at Simon the Leper\u2019s house in Bethany in the presence of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">those who loved him (<b>Matthew 26:6<\/b>). It was there that a woman <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">anointed his body with costly ointment. This was a controversial and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">prophetic act preparing Jesus for his burial (<b>26:6-13<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%; border-style: none;\">\n<p class=\"c16\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/heavens-beauty.info\/images\/FINAL_DAYS_IN_JERUSALEM.bmp\" alt=\"THE FINAL DAYS IN JERUSALEM\" width=\"374\" height=\"267\" align=\"left\" \/><span class=\"c7\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><b>THE FINAL DAYS IN JERUSALEM<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c16\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><span class=\"c7\">All four Gospels relate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem <strong>(Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-10; Luke 19:29-38; John 12:12-15)<\/strong>. At this time, crowds greeted Jesus and praised him as their king. This welcome stands in stark contrast with the crowd\u2019s later cry for his death. In fact, it was the second crowd that was doing God\u2019s bidding, since Jesus had not come to Jerusalem to reign but to die.<\/p>\n<p>The synoptic Gospels place the cleansing of the temple as the first main event following Jesus\u2019 entry into the city (<b>Matthew 21:12-13<\/b>; <b>Mark 11:15-17<\/b>; <b>Luke 19:45-46<\/b>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The clouds of opposition had been thickening, but the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">audacity of Jesus in clearing out the money-changers from the temple <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">area was too much for the authorities (<b>Mark 11:18<\/b>; <b>Luke 19:47<\/b>). The crucifixion loomed closer. Further controversies <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">developed between Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees (<b>Matthew 21:23-22:45<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In several cases, trick questions were posed in order to trap Jesus, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">but with consummate skill he turned their questions against them. The<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">opposition eventually reached the point where they dared not ask him <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">any more questions (<b>22:46<\/b>). Nearing his final hour, Jesus took<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the opportunity to instruct his disciples about future events, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">especially the end of the world. He reiterated the certainty of his<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">return and mentioned various signs that would precede that coming <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 24-25<\/b>; <b>Mark 13<\/b>; <b>Luke 21<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The purpose of this teaching was to provide a challenge to the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples to be watchful (<b>Matthew 25:13<\/b>) and diligent<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>25:14-30<\/b>). This section prepares the way for the events of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the arrest, the trial, the scourging, and crucifixion that followed<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">soon after. But first we must note the importance of the Lord\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Supper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">When Jesus sat at the table with his disciples on the night before he <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">died, he wished to give them a picture of his death\u2019s significance<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 26:26-30<\/b>; <b>Mark 14:22-25<\/b>; <b>Luke22:19-20<\/b>; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>1 Corinthians 11:23-26<\/b>). The use of the bread and wine for<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">this purpose was a happy choice because they were basic elements in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">everyday life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Through this symbolic significance Jesus gave an interpretation of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">his approaching death\u2014his body broken and his blood poured out for<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">others. It was necessary for Jesus to provide this reminder that his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">sacrificial death would seal a completely new covenant. Each time we<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">celebrate communion, we help prevent the church from losing sight of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the centrality of the cross.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">John\u2019s Gospel does not tell the story of the Last Supper. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Nevertheless, it does record a significant act in which Jesus washed<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the feet of the disciples as an example of humility (<b>John 13:1-20<\/b>). He impressed on the disciples the principle of service<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">to others. John follows this display of humility with a series of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">teachings Jesus gave on the eve of the Passion (<b>chapters 14-16<\/b>).<\/span> <br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The most important feature of this teaching was the promise of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples after Jesus had gone. Even<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">with his mind occupied by thoughts of approaching death, Jesus showed <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">himself more concerned about his disciples than about himself. This<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">is evident in the prayer of Jesus in <b>John 17<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">All the Gospel writers refer in advance to the betrayal by Judas <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 26:21-25<\/b>; <b>Mark 14:18-21<\/b>; <b>Luke 22:21-23<\/b>;<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>John 13:21-30<\/b>), which prepares readers for the final stages of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus journey to the cross.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c15\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/heavens-beauty.info\/images\/1q-agony-in-the-garden.jpg\" alt=\"THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST\" width=\"346\" height=\"258\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c22\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The various outbursts of popular support were soon <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">over and the determined opposition seemed to resume control. In <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">John\u2019s Gospel, the sense of approaching climax is expressed in terms <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">of <b>\u201chis hour\u201d<\/b> (<b>John 13:1<\/b>). When this at length comes, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the betrayal and arrest are seen as part of a larger plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">From the upper room where the Last Supper was eaten, Jesus went <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">straight to the Garden of Gethsemane (<b>Matthew 26:36-46<\/b>; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Mark 14:32-42<\/b>; <b>Luke 22:40-46<\/b>), where he prayed to his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Father with deep intensity and agony. It cost Jesus to identify <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">himself with man\u2019s need. He prayed for the cup of suffering to pass <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">from him, but at the same time he submitted to the Father\u2019s will.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The three disciples he took with him all fell asleep, while one of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">his other disciples, having betrayed his master, appeared at the<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">gates at the head of the group who had come to arrest him. At the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">moment of confrontation with Judas, Jesus exhibited an amazing<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">dignity when he addressed the betrayer as his <b>\u201cfriend\u201d <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 26:50<\/b>). He offered no resistance when he was arrested<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">and chided the crowd of people for their swords and clubs <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>26:55<\/b>).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c15\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/heavens-beauty.info\/images\/jesus7a.jpg\" alt=\"Jesus was first taken to the house of Annas, one of the high priests, for a preliminary examination\" width=\"277\" height=\"335\" align=\"left\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c13\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"c7\" style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\">THE TRIAL<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus was first taken to the house of Annas, one of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the high priests, for a preliminary examination (<b>John 18:13<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">During his trial, he was scorned by his enemies, and one of his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples, Peter, denied him three times (<b>Matthew 26:69-75<\/b>, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Mark 14:66-72<\/b>; <b>Luke 22:54-62<\/b>; <b>John 18:15-27<\/b>), as<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus predicted he would (<b>Matthew 26:34<\/b>; <b>Mark 14:30<\/b>; <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>John 13:38<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The official trial before the Sanhedrin was presided over by <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Caiaphas, who was puzzled when Jesus at first refused to speak. At <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">length Jesus predicted that the Son of Man would come on the clouds <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">of heaven; this was enough to make the high priest charge him with <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">blasphemy (<b>Mark 14:62-64<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Although he was spat upon and his face was struck, Jesus remained <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">calm and dignified. He showed how much greater he was than those who <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">were treating him with contempt. The further examinations before <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Pilate (<b>Matthew 27:1-2<\/b>; <b>Mark 15:1<\/b>; <b>Luke 23:1<\/b>;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>John 18:28<\/b>) and Herod (<b>Luke 23:7-12<\/b>) were more examples <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">of injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Again Jesus did not answer when asked about the charges before either <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Pilate (<b>Matthew 27:14<\/b>) or Herod (<b>Luke 23:9<\/b>). He<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">remained majestically silent, except to make a comment to Pilate <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">about the true nature of his kingship (<b>John 18:33-38<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The pathetic governor declared Jesus innocent, offered the crowds the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">release of either Jesus or Barabbas, and then publicly disclaimed<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">responsibility by washing his hands. It first describes his calling of two <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples, John and Andrew (<b>John 1:35-39<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This event is set against the background of John the Baptist\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">announcement of Jesus as the Lamb of God who was to take away the sin <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">of the world (<b>1:29<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Three others soon joined these first two disciples: Peter, Philip, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">and Nathanael (<b>1:41-51<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">These five formed part of the nucleus of Jesus\u2019 followers who came to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">be known as the Twelve. One feature of John\u2019s account is the early<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">recognition by the disciples of Jesus as Messiah (<b>1:41<\/b>) and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Son of God (<b>1:49<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Soon after Jesus began his ministry in Jerusalem, John relates an <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">incident at Cana in Galilee in which water was turned into wine<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>John 2:1-10<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This event is important in John\u2019s account because it is the first of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the <strong>\u201csigns\u201d<\/strong> that he records (<b>2:11<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">He saw Jesus\u2019 miracles as signs of the truth of the Gospel rather <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">than as mere wonders. John sets two incidents at Jerusalem in this<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">initial period. The first is the cleansing of the temple <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>2:13-16<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Matthew, Mark, and Luke all place this event just before Jesus\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">trial, but John places it at this early stage. The moral intention of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus\u2019 work is seen in his driving out the money-changers who were <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">inappropriately profiting from worshipers. This was apparently<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">acceptable in Judaism but was unacceptable to Jesus. The other Gospel <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">writers imply that this authoritative act was the event that sparked<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the final hostility of his opponents. John tells the story for a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">theological reason; to him, the cleansing of the temple was a parable<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">telling of what Jesus had come to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The other incident in Jerusalem is the meeting between Jesus and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Nicodemus (3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Nicodemus was closely associated with Judaism, yet he was also <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">searching for truth. He was unable to understand, however, the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">spiritual truth about being born again through the Spirit. Christians <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">receive a new start in life\u2014as if they had been born again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Their spiritual rebirth marks the moment they accept Jesus Christ as <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Lord and Savior and receive the Holy Spirit John\u2019s story then moves<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">from Judea to Samaria and the story of the Samaritan woman at the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">well (<b>John 4:1-42<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Jesus used her physical thirst to point to her deeper spiritual <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">thirst. She realized that Jesus had something to offer her that she<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">had not previously known. While the synoptic Gospels concentrate exclusively on the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">events in Galilee, John\u2019s account indicates that there were some <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">visits by Jesus to Jerusalem during this period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c12\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Also, John records another incident at Cana, where the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">son of a Capernaum official was healed. This is noted as the second <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">of Jesus\u2019 signs (<b>John 4:54<\/b>). Jesus did not <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">at this time appoint them to be apostles, but this call was an <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">indispensable step toward the establishment of the Twelve as a group. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Setting apart a particular number of disciples formed an important <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">part of the ministry of Jesus.<\/span> <br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The miraculous catch of fish, which preceded the call of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples in Luke\u2019s account, served to highlight the superiority of<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">the spiritual task of <strong><span class=\"c8\">\u201ccatching\u201d<\/span><\/strong> people <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">rather than fish. Jesus offered to teach them how to be fishers of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">unbelieving men and women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Another significant call came to Levi, otherwise known as Matthew <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">(<b>Matthew 9:9<\/b>; <b>Mark 2:13-14<\/b>; <b>Luke 5:27-28<\/b>). As a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">tax collector, he was of a different type from most of the other <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples. Jewish contemporaries despised him because of his<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">profession. But his inclusion in the special circle of Jesus\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">disciples shows the broad basis on which these men were chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">One of the others, Simon the Zealot, may have belonged to a group of <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">revolutionaries who were religious as well as political. Even a man<\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">like Judas Iscariot was numbered among the Twelve, and he would later <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">betray Jesus to his enemies for a small sum of money. Jesus accepted <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">them as they were and molded them into men who later came to learn <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">how to be totally dependent on God and the power of his Spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It commends moral and spiritual values. The teachings recorded in <\/span><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">this section were radical but not in a political sense.
