Wisdom is a special capacity, necessary for full human living; it can be acquired through education and the application of the mind.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<span class=\"c15\">What Is Wisdom, How Can We Become Wise<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Wisdom<\/b> in Scripture means choosing the best and noblest end at which to aim, along with the most appropriate and effective means to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Human wisdom<\/b> is displayed in the Old Testament Wisdom books (<b>Job<\/b>, <b>Psalms<\/b>, <b>Proverbs<\/b>, <b>Ecclesiastes<\/b>, and <b>Song of Songs<\/b>, showing how to <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>suffer, <span class=\"c17\">pray<\/span>, <span class=\"c17\">live<\/span>, <span class=\"c17\">enjoy<\/span>, and <span class=\"c17\">love<\/span>, <span class=\"c17\">respectively<\/span><\/strong><\/span>) and in James\u2019s letter (<span class=\"c17\">enforcing consistent Christian behavior<\/span>): it means making the <b>\u201cfear\u201d<\/b> of God\u2014that is, reverent worship and service of him\u2014one\u2019s goal (<b>Proverbs 1:7<\/b>; <b>9:10<\/b>; <b>Ecclesiastes 12:13<\/b>) and cultivating <span class=\"c17\">prudence<\/span>, <span class=\"c17\">fortitude<\/span>, <span class=\"c17\">forbearance<\/span>, and <span class=\"c17\">zeal<\/span> as means to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>God\u2019s wisdom<\/b> is seen in his works of <b>creation<\/b>, <b>preservation<\/b>, and <b>redemption<\/b>: it is his choice of his own glory as his goal (<b>Psalms<\/b> <b>46:10<\/b>; <b>Isa. 42:8<\/b>; <b>48:11<\/b>), and his decision to achieve it first by creating a marvelous variety of things and people (<b>Psalms<\/b> <b>104:24<\/b>; <b>Proverbs<\/b> <b>3:13-20<\/b>), second by kindly Providences of all sorts (<b>Psalms<\/b> <b>145:13-16<\/b>; <b>Acts 14:17<\/b>), and third by the redemptive <b>\u201cwisdom\u201d<\/b> of<strong> <span class=\"c17\">\u201cChrist crucified\u201d<\/span><\/strong> (<b>1 Cor. 1:18\u20132:16<\/b>) and the resultant world church (<b>Eph. 3:10<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The outworking of God\u2019s wisdom involves the expression of his will in both senses that that phrase bears. In the first and fundamental sense, God\u2019s will is his decision, or decree, about what shall happen\u2014<span class=\"c18\">\u201chis eternal purpose, according to the counsel of his will, whereby, for his own glory, he hath foreordained whatsoever comes to pass\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>Proverbs 8:11 &#8211; 14<\/b> For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you desire can be compared with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>12<\/b> <span class=\"c18\">\u201cI, Wisdom, live together with good judgment. I know where to discover knowledge and discernment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>13<\/b> All who fear the Lord will hate evil. That is why I hate pride, arrogance, corruption, and perverted speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\"><b>14<\/b> Good advice and success belong to me. Insight and strength are mine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">This is God\u2019s will of events, referred to in <b>Ephesians 1:11<\/b>. In the second and secondary sense, the will of God is his command, that is, his instruction, given in Scripture, as to how people should and should not behave: it is sometimes called his will of precept (see <b>Rom. 12:2<\/b>; <b>Eph. 5:17<\/b>; <b>Col. 1:9<\/b>; <b>1 Thess. 4:3-6<\/b>). Some of its requirements are rooted in his holy character, which we are to imitate: such are the principles of the Decalogue and the two great commandments (<b>Exodus. 20:1-17<\/b>; <b>Matt. 22:37-40<\/b>; cf. <b>Eph. 4:32\u20135:2<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Some of its requirements spring simply from the divine institution: such were circumcision and the Old Testament sacrificial and purity laws, and such are baptism and the Lord\u2019s Supper today. But all bind the conscience alike, and God\u2019s plan of events already includes the <strong><span class=\"c17\">\u201cgood works\u201d<\/span> <\/strong>of obedience that those who believe will perform (<b>Eph. 2:10<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">It is sometimes hard to believe that costly obedience, putting us at a disadvantage in the world (<span class=\"c17\">as loyal obedience to God often does<\/span>), is part of a predestined plan for furthering both God\u2019s glory and our own good (<b>Rom. 8:28<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">But we are to glorify God by believing that it is so, and that one day we shall see it to be so; for his wisdom is supreme and never fails. Making known his will of precept, and governing the responses of human free agency to it, is one means whereby God accomplishes his will of events, even when the response is one of unbelief and disobedience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c14\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">Paul illustrates this when he tells the Romans that Israel\u2019s unbelief has its place in God\u2019s plan for advancing the gospel (<b>Rom. 11:11-15<\/b>, <b>25-32<\/b>): a realization that prompts the cry: <span class=\"c18\">\u201cOh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom . . . of God! . . . To him be the glory for ever! Amen\u201d<\/span> (<b>33, 36<\/b>).
